Southland Summer Challenge

9th December 2017 – Croydon Lodge, Gore

New 5 hour adventure race run by Southland Tri Club.  Details will be posted on their website.

The Ruby Swim

January 27th or 28th 2018
The Ruby Swim celebrates swimming in Lake Wanaka – out to and around the sentinel of Ruby Island. Treat it as a race if you like –  the winners of the 2.5km Ruby Ring are rewarded with actual bespoke one-off rings! But with a range of distances from 200m to 1.2km for the younger or novice open water swimmer; a good middle distance of 2.5km between a half and the full Challenge distance, the circumnavigation of Ruby Island fits the bill. In addition, with Challenge only three weeks afterwards, the 3.8km Big Ruby is the perfect practice and acclimatisation to the generally colder waters than most Challenge swimmers are used to.

New for 2018 is a 10km event being four laps of The Ruby course.

But the event is not just about the how fast you can go. Ruby Island is an icon in the Wanaka landscape, featured in thousands of photos and in the lore of Wanaka. In sight, but also just out of reach, to swim around it is the most brilliant experience and it holds a special surprise as you swim past the southern tip.

So race it or experience it. It’s a good outing either way.
