Challenge Wanaka Full – Rules & Waiver

Challenge Wanaka is run under Triathlon New Zealand competition rules and Challenge Wanaka rules

  • The race distances are 3.8km swim; 180km bike and 42.2km run
  • At all times competitors must obey the instructions of Race officials and Police Officers and beware of vehicular transport. Any competitor who fails to obey the instructions of Race officials or the Police will be removed from the Event and disqualified. The Event Director and Race Referee have the discretion to disqualify competitors.
  • Please obey all traffic laws and regulations at all times and treat all parts of the course as open to the public and vehicles at all times. While some parts of the course may be closed to public access, residential, emergency and Event vehicles will be using the course, and all road rules and regulations must therefore be followed at all times. Left hand drive rules apply.
  • Challenge Wanaka is an invitation event, and the Event organisers may refuse entry to any competitor, on any grounds, and at their own discretion without explanation.
  • Cancellation policy: Refund of 75% until 30 September. Refund of 50% until 31 December. Absolutely no refund after 31 December. All entries are non-transferable to other athletes or other years. No changes between disciplines (half and full distances) are permitted after 31 December.
  • Team member changes will incur a $50 fee per change after 25 January.
  • No team member changes are permitted after 10 February.
  • Entries close midnight 25 January.
  • The Event Medical Team will have ultimate discretion and the final decision as to the suitability of a competitor to continue in the Event, and likewise if they should be withdrawn from the Event.
  • No competitor may use any banned substances with the intent to improve their performance, eliminate the sense of fatigue or for any other purpose. Doping tests will be performed.  Any competitor serving a ban for banned substances in another sport is not permitted to enter.
  • It is important that all competitors exhibit good behaviour and sportsmanlike conduct, and treat fellow competitors, Event organisers, volunteers and contractors with courtesy and respect. Failure to do so may result in disqualification at any time before, during or after the Event.
  • If a competitor withdraws from the Event they must advise the course officials of their withdrawal immediately. Any competitor failing to do so and being the subject of a resulting search and rescue operation will incur all costs relating to this exercise if they are found to be in their accommodation or other such safe place.
  • Challenge Wanaka reserves the right to alter rules, regulations, Event course and venues at any time provided athletes are advised prior to the Event, or if such a change is in the interest of competitor safety.
  • No headphones or headsets may be worn during swim or bike legs of the event. Personal MP3 players are permitted on the run leg. Volume must be at a level that allows outside noise to be heard. If an official is not heard by an athlete due to excessive volume, the Event reserves the right to remove the MP3 player in the interest of safety.
  • Challenge Wanaka competitors may not compete with a bare torso.
  • Each competitor must be familiar with the entire course and it is their responsibility to follow the correct route.
  • Any protests must be lodged with the Race Referee within two hours of the athlete finishing the Event, or within two hours of their disqualification (if relevant) and must be accompanied by a $50 lodgement fee. If their protest is upheld, the $50 will be refunded in full. If the protest is not upheld, the fee will be forfeited.
  • Compulsory gear includes a wetsuit, swim cap and head torch if on run course after dark. The bike and run special needs bags must contain a thermal top as we are in an alpine environment with large temperature fluctuations.  Your bags will be checked for these items and absence of any of this compulsory gear will result in disqualification.
  • Optional gear includes swim gloves (webbing not allowed), neoprene vest (under wetsuits) and swim booties. Swim skins are not allowed as a wetsuit alternative.
  • In the case of bad weather, Challenge Wanaka reserves the right to convert the Event to duathlon status in the interests of competitor safety but will not be held liable for any loss as a result of such a decision. If the conditions are still deemed to be unsafe to run a duathlon, Challenge Wanaka has sole discretion, and may cancel the Event without obligation to refund entry fees.
  • Challenge Wanaka may test any athlete for the use of a prohibited substance at its own discretion. A positive test will result in disqualification.
  • Team categories include Men, Women and Mixed categories. Winning teams receive 1 free team entry for 2019 or 3 individual Half entries for 2019 event
  • Age Group categories will be in 10 year increments and must have at least 10 entrants to qualify as a category. Trophies will be awarded to the top three in each age group so long as they are an official category. The age groups are: 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+.
  • The winner of each age group category (as above) will qualify for a spot at Challenge Roth.  Each athlete who registers will have to pay 560 € entry fee during the registration process.
  • Individual athletes must be a minimum of 20-years-old on race day.
  • Team athletes must be a minimum of 18-years-old on race day.  Younger team athletes may be able to compete at the discretion of the Race Director.
  • Age groups categories will be decided in line with Tri NZ rules – age as of 31 December 2018
  • Team athletes may race for one team only
  • Provided race numbers must be visible at all times throughout the race.
  • All athletes must register during the allocated times and attend the compulsory race briefing. All individuals and teams must rack their bicycles during the allocated times – there will be no exceptions to this rule. The Event organisers reserve the right to disqualify anyone not adhering to these rules.
  • The course will close at 11:30pm.
  • Age group winners that qualify for entry spots at Roth must complete the event under 16:45 hours.

Waiver, Release and Liability Discharge

  • I understand that competing in the Event involves using public areas and roads used by other people and traffic and I am aware of the hazards involved. The hazards include but are not limited to: vehicle traffic, actions of competitors, spectators, Event personnel, weather conditions and my physical and mental state of health. In my judgment I have sufficient competence and experience to participate safely in the Event.
  • I certify that I am physically fit, have sufficiently trained for participation in the Event and I have not been advised otherwise by a qualified medical person.
  • I certify that as an individual athlete I will be 20 years of age or older on 17 February 2018 and as a team athlete I will be 18 year of age or older on 17 February 2018.
  • I will follow the course set out for the Event, abide by the road and Event rules and follow the instructions given to me by Event officials, at all times. Failure to comply in any way with these matters may lead to me being removed from the Event and disqualified (at any time).
  • I will wear the Event number and transponder as directed by the Event officials. [I must return the transponder after the event otherwise I will be charged $100 for its non-return].
  • Should the Event be cancelled or stopped for any reason, or personal circumstances arise that prevent me from participating in (or completing the Event), I accept that my entry fee is non-refundable.
  • In consideration of the acceptance of my entry, I hereby take action for myself, my executors, administrators, heirs, next of kin, successors and assigns as follows:
  • I HEREBY WAIVE, RELEASE AND DISCHARGE from any and all liability for death, disability, personal injury, property damage, property theft and all other foreseeable risks, claims or actions of any kind (including negligence) whatever and however occurring which may arise, at any time, from or in connection with, directly or indirectly, my participation in the Event, the following persons or entities: The Event Organisers, Event officials and personnel, land managers and/or owners, event sponsors, volunteers, Queenstown Lakes District Council, New Zealand Police, Transit New Zealand, and all of their respective officers, directors, employees, independent contractors, representatives, agents and volunteers.
  • I HEREBY INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS the persons or entities mentioned in the above paragraph from any and all liabilities, claims or actions (including negligence) whatever and however caused which may arise, at any time, as a result of or in connection with, directly or indirectly, my participation in the Event and vis-à-vis any third party, as far as this third party suffered any damage or injury during the Event due to my participation in the Event.
  • I acknowledge that the Event Organisers reserve the right to alter the advertised course or start time (at their absolute discretion).
  • I consent to receive any medical treatment that may be deemed necessary in the event of injury, accident or illness during the Event, and I allow that information to be passed on to the Event Organisers or third parties (as deemed necessary by the Event Organisers).
  • I authorise the use of my name, voice and picture and any information provided by me on this entry form to be used without payment in any broadcast, telecast, communication, promotion, or advertising, and I also agree that the information I have provided may be used by the Event Organisers for the purpose of promoting future or other events or for the promotion of the Event charity(ies), race sponsors products and services.
  • I acknowledge that the Event Organisers have the absolute discretion in the award of any prizes, prize money or third party prize or award and I will abide fully and without dispute with all such decisions of the Event Organisers.
  • I have read all the Event safety information, rules and conditions detailed in this form and on the entry form (and/or as detailed on the event website www.challenge-wanaka.com and I agree to adhere to these rules and conditions at all times.
  • I have read and voluntarily sign this Waiver, Release and Liability Discharge Form and explicitly agree to its content.

  • Challenge Wanaka Half reserves the right to alter rules, regulations, Event course and venues at any time provided athletes are advised prior to the Event, or if such a change is in the interest of competitor safety.
  • No headphones or headsets may be worn during the swim or cycle. Personal MP3 players are permitted on the run leg. Volume must be at a level that allows outside noise to be heard. If an official is not heard by an athlete due to excessive volume, the Event reserves the right to remove the MP3 player in the interest of safety.
  • Challenge Wanaka Half competitors may not compete with a bare torso.
  • Each competitor must be familiar with the entire course and it is their responsibility to follow the correct route.
  • Any protests must be lodged with the Race Referee within 2 hours of the athlete finishing the Event, or within two hours of their disqualification (if relevant) and must be accompanied by a $50 lodgement fee. If their protest is upheld, the $50 will be refunded in full. If the protest is not upheld, the fee will be forfeited.
  • Compulsory gear includes a wetsuit and swim cap.
  • Recommended gear includes a neoprene swim cap under the supplied cap. This becomes compulsory if the water temperature is below 14C.
  • Optional gear includes swim gloves (webbing not allowed), neoprene vest (under wetsuits) and swim booties. Swim skins are not allowed as a wetsuit alternative.
  • Challenge Wanaka reserves the right to implement the contingency plan in the interests of competitor safety but will not be held liable for any loss as a result of such a decision. In the event such a decision is made, if the conditions are still deemed to be unsafe, Challenge Wanaka has sole discretion, and may cancel the Event without obligation to refund entry fees.
  • Challenge Wanaka may test any athlete for the use of a prohibited substance at its own discretion – a positive test resulting in disqualification.
  • Prize money shall not be paid out until all drug-testing results are confirmed.
  • Prize money paid as follows (in NZ dollars); 1st $5,000, 2nd $2,750, 3rd $1,750, 4th $1,250, 5th $1,000, 6th $750. Prize money applies to individual Pro Men’s and individual Pro Women’s fields only. There is no %age rule based on times but prize money will be paid according to overall race position. Athletes must provide proof of their professional status to be eligible for prize money.
  • All prize money over NZ$500 is liable under New Zealand law to 20% withholding tax and this will be deducted prior to payment. All bank fees are the responsibility of each competitor.
  • Age Group categories will be in five year. Trophies will be awarded to the top three in each age group so long as they are an official category. The age groups are: 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69
  • Individual athletes must be a minimum of 18-years-old on race day.
  • Team athletes must be a minimum of 16-years-old on race day.  Younger team athletes may be able to compete at the discretion of the Race Director.
